Animal facts-Warty Newt

In this post of the Amazing facts about animals we'll be discussing the Warty Newt.

 

Warty Newts live in Europe. These creatures are an amphibious carnivore. Warty Newts can live up to 25 years in the wild. This amphibian can grow up to 7 inches long. To put it in perspective, Warty Newts are the size of a cup. This blue or orange amphibian has a big crest on its back. Females are larger than the males. Warty Newts are nocturnal and are voracious eaters. Their diet consists of slugs, worms, insects, tadpoles and mollusks. To survive, their bodies must have water on their skin at all times. Warty Newts spend a lot of time in hibernation. Females can lay 200-300 eggs in a batch. Like other newts, it can re-grow body parts if necessary.

Fun fact: in Europe you have to have a newt license to own one. If you decide you want one of these, my suggestion is you shouldn't get a male and a female or... well, you'll have your whole house filled with Warty Newts.

Animal facts-Aardvark

 Today we'll be looking at the Aardvark.

Aardvarks live in Africa and are also known as ant bears. These creatures are omnivorous, nocturnal mammals. Aardvarks can weigh up to 130 pounds and their sticky tongue can be 12 in. long. Termites and ants are their favorite foods. For protection during the day they dig burrows under the ground. Aardvarks produce one offspring per year and it lives with the parents for 6 weeks.

Animal Facts-Tylosaurus Proriger

     Here's another post featuring a beast from the past. One thing that I've learned about these beasts is that their names are almost unpronounceable! So here's a creature called Tylosaurus Proriger.

  Tylosaurus Proriger was a carnivorous prehistoric animal that lived in the waters. These extinct creatures could get up to 45 ft. in length and lived in the late Cretaceous period. Tylosaurus Proriger came from the mosasaur family and were considered to be the most dangerous underwater creatures. This prehistoric animal used its snout to locate food. It had two rows of teeth in its mouth and ate mostly fish, birds, sharks and other mosasaurs. The females gave live birth to a 2- 6 ft. baby Tylosaurus Proriger.

Animal facts-Web-Footed Gecko

Hi everyone,

     I know I haven't posted anything new since April. I should have more time over the next few months. Happy belated Father's Day to all the dads out there. I'm one-day behind. I had a great Father's Day. We had Costco pizza and my grandparents were able to be here. It was great. Now, let's get down to business. Today, I'll be discussing the animal called Web-Footed Gecko. 

 

   The Web-Footed Gecko is a reptile and a carnivore. This creature lives in parts of the south western coast of Africa. In the wild, this Gecko has an average life span of 5 years. This reptile can grow up to 4 to 6 inches. The web-footed gecko's salmon-colored skin and light-brown stripes help it stay camouflaged in the Namib Desert's reddish sands. Adaptations to their webbed feet not only help them stay atop, but to bury beneath the dunes of the Namib Desert. It is strictly a nocturnal lizard,  spending the day in self-dug burrows and emerging at night to feed. The Gecko's bloodshot-looking eyes are massively over-sized to help them detect prey, which includes crickets, grasshoppers, and small spiders. They move surprisingly quickly across the sand, and adhesive pads on their toes make them excellent climbers. Web-foots are considered medium-size geckos, reaching an average size of about four inches (ten centimeters) in length. Males are slightly smaller than females. The Web-Footed Geckos also communicate with a wide range of vocalizations, including squeaks, clicks, and even croaks!

Animal facts-Badger

In this post I'll be discussing the badger. Anyone out there who's a Wisconsin Badger football fan? I'm one. Oh great, now I'm going to get bad comments from Ohio St. Buckeye fans or Michigan St. Spartan fans. By the way, Badgers won the 2011 Big Ten Championship game - at Sparty fans. I guess I got off on a tangent... we're not talking about sports but about facts on amazing animals. So here's some facts about badgers.

 

Badgers live in all the continents except Antarctica and Australia. Badgers can live up to 2 years. Badgers are mammals and are omnivores. They can have up to five babies. They are shy and live in groups up to 5. When together it is called a crete or clan. There are estimated to be 28,000 badgers in the United Kingdom, for those who live in the UK. I thought you might want to know that. They are closely related to the otter, marten and weasel. They have a strong sense of smell. The cubs are born in February. They have big claws. Badgers are less active in the winter. They eat worms, insects and other small animals. There are 8 species of badgers. They are white and black.

Animal facts-Piranha

Hello all. Thanks for being patient with me. I've been so busy. Here's another great animal. In this post I will be discussing the Piranha. By the way, has anyone seen Piranha the movie? I just watched a few seconds of it once. Enough of this, let's get to the real matter - facts about Piranhas.

 

They live in the Amazon River. They are also called Caribes. Piranhas can live up to 25 years. They are a fish and an omnivore. The feamles can lay up to 5000 eggs. The male and the female help protect the eggs. 90% of the eggs survive as well. When together it is called a school. Adults can weigh up to 4 lbs. They can get up to 5 cm. long. Pira means fish and sanha means tooth. Piranhas live in fresh water. Piranhas have 20 teeth. The largest tooth found in a piranha was recorded at 43 cm but most get to be 20 cm long. They can even bite though steel. There are 38 valid species of piranha that we know of. They are gray, yellow, red or blue. In addition to meat, they eat fish, insects, snails, and plants. They are not threatened at all even though many animals do try to eat them.

Animal facts-Quetzals

In this blog I will be discussing one of the most beautiful birds in the world - Quetzals.

Quetzals live in northern parts of Central America. They are mostly found in Guatemala. Quetzals are birds and are an omnivore. Quetzals are 15-16 in. long and can weigh up to 8 oz. Quetzals are also threatened. They are considered the most beautiful bird in the entire world by a lot of people. They eat fruit, insects, lizards and other small animals. Their colors come in many colors like: blue, green, red and yellow. These birds were sacred to the Aztecs and the Mayans. They are usually found in tall trees. The females can lay up to 204 eggs per batch. This bird is also the national bird of Guatemala.

Hello all. I'm back and this post will be about the platypus which is an extremely interesting creature. I want to remind you all that you can subscribe to me and leave comments. They live in eastern Australia and Tasmania. They are a mammal and are a carnivore. They can grow up to 3 lbs. They have poisonous stingers on their rear feet and their head and feet are like a duck, their body is like a beaver and their tail is like an otter. Males have the stingers not the females. They hunt under water. They fold their ears to keep the water from coming in. They can stay under water for around 2 minutes. They eat insects, larva, shellfish and worms. They pick up gravel and dirt just like ducks have to do to chew up their food. They are the only one of to mammals that lay eggs. The mothers usually only lay 2 eggs she can keep them warm. She stays with her babies for 3-4 months. The eggs are the size of marbles. They have thick fur as well. They can live up to 12 years. In winter season they store the fat in the tail. Each day they need to eat at least a ¼ of their weight.

Animal facts-Ocelot

In this blog post I will be discussing the Ocelot.

They live in parts of Mexico, Central America and South America. They are mammals and are carnivores. They can weigh up to 50 lbs. They are threatened as well. They have dappled hair, which helps them camouflage. They are twice the size of a domesticated cat. These are nocturnal cats. They eat rabbits, rodents, fish, iguanas, frogs, monkeys and fish. Unlike other cats they swim quite well. These cats can adapt in human places as well. Humans target ocelot’s fur as well. In autumn they give birth to little kittens.

Animal facts-Draco Lizard

In this blog post I will be discussing the draco lizard.

Draco lizards are reptiles and they are a carnivore. They live in Southeast Asia. They can grow up to 8.4 inches long. They are abundant throughout different continents and have no special conservation status. Draco lizards use their long, slender tails to steer themselves, and each sortie can carry them up to 30 feet. These are so-called flying dragons because they can fly from tree to tree. They have a set of elongated ribs, which they can extend and retract. Between these ribs are folds of skin that rest flat against the body. They have flattened bodies, which also aid in flight, and are a mottled brown in color. The undersides of their wings are blue in males and yellow in females. They also have a flap of skin on the bottom of their necks called a dewlap. This is bright yellow in males and bluish gray in females. Although Draco's usually avoid going to the ground, females still must descend to deposit eggs. The lizard uses her pointed snout to create a small hole in the ground, where she lays about five eggs and then covers the hole with dirt. She remains on the ground for about 24 hours, fiercely guarding the nest, and then returns to the trees and leaves the eggs to their fate.

Animal facts-Arsinoitherium

In this blog post I will be discussing the Arsinoitherium.

This creature roamed the earth for 5 million years on the plans of northern Africa. Its Greek for ‘Arsenoe’s beast”. This is how you pronounce the prehistoric animal. are-sih-noy-THEE-re-um. It’s about 10 ft. wide and around one ton. Its diet was plants. It has the body of a rhinoceros –like trunk with two conical horns on its head. They are mammals. No predators would try to fight this creature because of their deadly horns. Whoever had the biggest horns would win the female and mate with her. You can find bones in Egypt of this creature. It was probably a swamp dweller as well in the plains.

Animal facts-Rhinoceros

In this blog post I will be discussing the Rhinoceros.

They live in Asia and South Africa. They are mammals and are herbivores. There are 5 species of rhinoceros, black, white, sumartran and Indian. They are on the endangered list. They like to live in savannahs, grasslands and subtropical forests. The sumartran is the smallest rhino at 2,200 lbs. The biggest rhino is the white rhino at 5,500 lbs. The rhino’s horn grows all it’s life. The rhino’s horn is used for Chinese medicine. They have poor vision but excellent smell. When they feel the threatened they charge. They are more active in the night than in the day. They can sleep lying down or standing up. They can run up to 30-40 miles per hour. A group of rhinos is called a clash.

They live in Madagascar. They are a mammal and a carnivore. They can live up to 15 years in the wild. They can weigh up to 25 lbs. They are on the endangered list as well. They are a relative to the mongoose. They can grow up to six ft. It is the largest carnivore in Madagascar. They eat lemurs, mice and any thing they can get their hands on. They are solitary animals and will spend most of their time in trees. Mothers will give birth to 2-4 young. They live in warm forests.

They can live in swamps, forestlands and farms. The males are the only one that sings. They are the loudest songbirds of volume. They are usually found in pairs. They live on spiders, larva, berries and fruit. The females lay fours eggs.
